My summary of the Kidscount Data set is that the majority of North Kingstown families have above average annual income at $110,880.00, approximately $40,000-$50,000 higher than most Rhode Island families which makes this a mostly affluent community. The number of children living at or below the poverty level are 11.9% showing a large income gap between North Kingstown's richest to poorest students. Another interesting indicator of a large number of families struggling to provide for their children is the 22% of students participating in the school breakfast program when only half of those students are identified as living at or below the poverty line. One can make the suggestion that close to 25% of North Kingstown's children are nutritionally challenged which we know impacts learning readiness. One percent of North Kingstown's children are born at the highest risk level and two percent are receiving cash benefits which shows again that the one to two percent poorest students must be the focus in order to level the playing field for the one percent of students who are struggling with basic nutrition and developmental health issues. Although the district has poverty affected students, the high school graduation rate is 90% which is 10% higher than the state average. There seems to be a very small percentage, 1% of English language Learners at N, 6% fewer than the state average. I am interested as to whether or not the majority of NKSD's ESL students are at or below the poverty line since 1-2% of NKSD students are the most at risk. There is not much diversity in the student body at NKSD according the town's demographics(US Census Data).
